Rupert Murdoch, a media mogul, has announced his engagement with Ann Lesley Smith, 66. She will become the fifth wife of Rupert Murdoch, 92, if and when they tie the knot.
Smith, a former San Francisco police chaplain was married to Chester Smith, a country singer and radio/TV executive until his death in 2008, he was 78 years of age.
“For us both it’s a gift from God. We met last September,” she told The New York Post, a cornerstone of Murdoch’s media empire. “I’m a widow of 14 years. Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman. Worked for local papers, developed radio and TV stations, and helped promote Univision. So I speak Rupert’s language. We share the same beliefs.”
She continued, “In perspective, it’s not my first rodeo.” “Getting close to 70 is being in the final half.” “I waited until the right moment, and my friends are very happy for me.”
Murdoch, for his part, described Smith’s meeting at his vineyard Moraga, Bel Air, California.
She and her late husband were also a winemaker and owned a vineyard. When there were 200 people at my vineyard last year, I met her and we spoke a lot. Two weeks later, I called her.
Deep in wisdom, I said: Okay. Today, it’s about couples living together. There is no ceremony. This is the latest trend. Hollywood even has a divorce settlement that they can work out before proceeding with any wedding.
Both of us are looking forward to the second half of our lives together.
According to The Post, the couple will travel between California, New York, Montana, and the United Kingdom while their friends “scout shops and designers for Ann’s gown.”
This announcement comes less than one year after Murdoch announced his separation from actress Jerry Hall. The pair said they had “irreconcilable disagreements” and Hall was in a long-term relationship with Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones frontman. Hall has four children with Jagger. Hall and Murdoch began dating in 2015, and they were married one year later.
Hall stated in a petition to Los Angeles Superior Court that she wasn’t aware of the full extent of Murdoch’s assets and debts. She will amend the petition once the information is known. Hall later admitted that she was “devastated” and heartbroken by their split and blamed Murdoch and his children for creating a rift between them.
Hall’s source said that the children believed Jerry was keeping them away from him. She does not blame the children for deteriorating the marriage. She found it a very unpleasant surprise that they had so much to talk about and played a part in his personal life. They clearly mistrusted her.
The source said that they had been planning to spend the summer together in London. But then, a message was sent instructing her to contact him only through lawyers.
Murdoch, meanwhile, has six children across three of his four previous marriages; Prudence, 64, with his first wife Patricia Booker; Elisabeth, 54 Lachlan, 50, and James, 49, with his second wife Anna Mann; and finally two daughters Grace, 21, and Chloe, 19, with his third wife Wendy Deng.
