On Friday, President Donald Trump ordered the dismissal of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner, Erika L. McEntarfer, following a jobs report that indicated employment growth was weaker than initially expected.
McEntarfer, nominated for the position by former President Joe Biden in 2023 and later confirmed by the United States Senate in the subsequent year, finds her tenure abruptly ended due to this recent development.
“We need accurate job numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social. The President’s dismissive remarks followed the release of recent jobs data, which he has deemed unsatisfactory.
The President’s post further indicates that he believes the jobs data, which McEntarfer oversaw, was manipulated for political gain. He alleges that this manipulation was intended to boost the electoral chances of Vice President Kamala Harris before the 2024 Presidential Election. These are strong accusations that have added further tension to an already contentious situation.

Supporters of President Trump believe that accurate and unbiased jobs data is crucial for the health of the American economy. Critics argue, however, that the firing represents an abuse of Presidential power and undermines the independence of statistical agencies.
McEntarfer stated that a major mistake was made in the reported jobs figures, particularly a downward revision of 258,000 jobs in previous months. The President also alleged gamesmanship by the Federal Reserve in lowering interest rates before the election.
This development follows earlier reports of an overstated job growth figure in March 2024 by approximately 818,000. The President cited this and similar incidents as grounds for McEntarfer’s dismissal.
The dismissal of a key government official tasked with reporting on the health of the job market raises important questions about the independence of statistical reporting and the sanctity of these democratic institutions.
