Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has publicly endorsed New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the upcoming mayoral election, also suggesting that former Governor Andrew Cuomo step aside.

Ackman, following meetings with both Adams and Cuomo, aired his views late last Thursday night. According to his statements, he discerns that Adams holds the highest likelihood of securing victory in the imminent election, and that Cuomo’s withdrawal would further cement Adams’ odds.

Ackman, while expressing respect for Cuomo and his past contributions to the state, was notably critical of his readiness for the political battle. He observed that Cuomo exhibited a lack of vigour and uncertainty in his strategies to counter Zohran Mamdani, the alternative mayoral candidate.

Ackman’s endorsement of Adams comes with high praise for his grit and determination. Ackman views Adams, a former New York City police officer, as a formidable opponent for Mamdani and his socialist-leaning policies. Ackman also commended Adams’s campaigning skills and his ability to marshal grassroots support, despite acknowledging some shortcomings in his first term.

This development follows earlier reports that Adams had relied heavily on his inner circle for staffing his administration. Ackman, however, stresses that when one considers his tenure in its entirety, Adams’s first term has been strong. He further noted that Mamdani’s democratic socialist policies potentially provide Adams with a pool of talented citizens ready to join his team, and that the incumbent mayor is dedicated to recruiting the ‘best and the brightest’ for his campaign and administration.

Adams’ term has seen significant strides in public safety, quality of life, and economic growth. A decline in major crime by double digits, a drop in shootings to an all-time low, and a curtailment of subway crime are some of the feats that stand out. In addition, Adams’ administration has witnessed record job growth and a surge in small businesses, especially after the initial job losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adams’s efforts to make the city more affordable and reduce the tax burden for working-class New Yorkers are noteworthy. Ackman’s reports indicate that under Adams’ watch, a significant number of city inhabitants saw their city income taxes eliminated or reduced. Adams also safeguarded the child care voucher system and allocated a special police unit to tackle ‘quality of life’ crimes.

There are, however, questions that remain unanswered, such as how Adams will continue to handle New York City’s social and economic challenges if re-elected. The significance of this should not be overlooked. As the election draws near, the public’s right to accurate information and understanding of each candidate’s policies becomes ever more important.
