It seems that hypocrisy isn’t limited to the Democratic Party and the residents of Martha’s Vineyard. China is not only creating oppressive laws, implementing credit scores, and pirating American technology. It also wants to address America’s immigration problems.
According to the Free Beacon, the Global Times is a Chinese state-run publication. On Sunday, the Global Times published an opinion piece criticizing the U.S. and in particular Govs. Ron DeSantis (Republican-Fla.) criticized Greg Abbott (Republican-Texas), over recent developments regarding illegal immigrants. The piece was entitled “Political stunts against migrants show new lows in politics”. It accused Texas and Florida governors, among others, of using money intended to help immigrants to be transported to sanctuary cities.
Both Democrats and Republicans are criticized in the piece. The Left is accused of launching “opinion counter offensives”, and at one point, it states:
“Meanwhile the Democrats have shown that despite their reputation for being open and tolerant to migrants, they are no less hostile or fearful towards migrants than their Republican counterparts.” NBC News Saturday story quoted Max Lefeld, founder, and CEO of Casa Venezuela Dallas foundation – a charity dedicated to helping refugees – who said that the relocation was like “taking out the trash.” Trump used to call migrants from “sh**hole” countries coming to the US. Now, the Democrats are speaking out as well – all of them view migrants as “hot potatoes.”
Because the op-ed can be dangerous as it allows people from both sides to find common ground when they are taken into small pieces. However, tiny pieces of truth can mask a larger lie: China does not have any business lecturing people about human rights.
According to the Borgen project, China is well-known among others for censoring the internet, as well as limiting worship to state-approved congregations. One of my friends was held in a Chinese prison for seven years for having the wrong faith. People were held without access to legal counsel, formal charges, or a trial.
Then there are the Uyghurs. The Independent Uyghur Tribunal was reported by the BBC in 2021. It found that China had engaged in a “deliberate, systematic, and coordinated policy” to reduce the Uyghur population and other ethnic minorities.
BBC also published a piece detailing the allegations of a detainee that Uyghur women were taken out of their cells at night to be tortured, and raped. A Kazakh woman testified that she was forced to strip her waist to inspect Chinese men who would then choose the women they wanted to have raped.
A report from Congressional Research Services in 2022 stated that China had committed forced assimilation. It placed between 1 million and 1.8 million Uyghurs into re-education centers. There were also allegations of forced labor. There have been reports that Sun received about forced sterilization.
It’s a far cry from flying 50 people on a flight to Martha’s Vineyard.
