On Tuesday, voters in Delaware’s 1st congressional district elected state senator Sarah McBride of Wilmington to the U.S. House of Representatives. This is the first transgender person to be elected to Congress.
NBC News reported:
NBC News predicts that Democrat Sarah McBride will win the House seat for Delaware’s 1st Congressional District. She is the first transgender woman elected to Congress.
McBride defeated Republican John Whalen III with 57.6% votes.
McBride was born biologically a man, but in 2020 she became the first transgender legislator of California. At the time she was the highest-ranking transgender politician in the United States. Rachel Levine, Assistant Secretary of Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, became the country’s highest-ranking transgender official.
McBride’s arrival in Congress could present some parliamentary challenges, especially as the use of transgender bathrooms has been controversial in the past.
Democrats will use McBride to undermine Republican opposition to certain transgender policies. However, the exact way these debates are conducted depends on which party is in control of the House. Republicans have a very slim majority and the outcome of a few congressional races could be decided in days or weeks.
