Gavin Newsom continues to be obsessed with Ron DeSantis and, more generally, the State of Florida.
It is hard to pinpoint the exact date when the largely one-sided fight began, but Newsom first started publicly expressing his anger at DeSantis during the summer of 2022. Newsom called the Florida Governor a bully and claimed that the state wanted to stop people from being able to love who they want. Evidently, opposing mutilation and the sexualization of young children stops adults from loving one another.
The situation escalated. Newsom has also tried to blame mass shootings on Florida laws that had not yet been implemented. California Governor has also made ridiculous claims that his state was actually more affordable than Florida for middle-class families. Newsom also made a rant early in June, in which he accused DeSantis of kidnapping because Florida had flown an illegal immigrant to Sacramento.
You get the picture. Newsom has repeatedly demanded that DeSantis debate the Florida man because he believes he lives in his head. Why? You can guess as well as I.

He would, for sure. Newsom is a guy who threatens while his friends keep him in check, knowing that he will not have to actually back up the threats. What is the point of this debate? The whole point of the Federalist system is that states don’t have to debate with each other about internal policies. Is Newsom actually running for the presidency and we don’t even know it?
DeSantis replied in the same vein, telling Newsom not to “pussyfoot” around.

Newsom, like any progressive, wants both his cake and his ice cream. He wants to increase his national profile and prepare himself for a potential presidential showdown without having to commit to a campaign. Imagine DeSantis demanding Donald Trump debate before he announced a run in 2024. That would have been a stupid move. Newsom is essentially doing that.
If he really wants to be in the game he has to get involved. Declare your presidential bid and take on Joe Biden. Newsom, as I have said, would probably win the Democrat nomination over Biden. He’d also be a formidable candidate in the general election because he speaks to the suburban wine-mom leftist crowd.
Why would any Republican debate him if he didn’t declare? Even less so before he became the Democrat candidate. Newsom needs to worry more about his state which is experiencing a mass exodus. This pretty much ends any debate even before it begins. Voters vote with their feet and are fleeing California for Florida. Newsom cannot change this, no matter how many gels he uses in his hair.
