Newly obtained emails suggest that financier Jeffrey Epstein and his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell maintained a closer working and personal relationship than has been publicly acknowledged. The correspondence, reviewed by Bloomberg News, spans from 2002 to 2022 and provides insight into their interactions.

The emails indicate that Maxwell and Epstein discussed shared financial and personal matters, including a fertility procedure, at a time when Maxwell had previously claimed to have distanced herself from him. The exchanges also touched on efforts to discredit women who raised allegations against Epstein, including references to sharing compromising information about one of his alleged victims.

Financial and business matters were also referenced in the emails. Maxwell is shown to have opened at least one foreign bank account using Epstein’s address, served as a director of one of his revenue-generating companies, and participated in stock transactions in businesses in which both were invested. Additionally, a spreadsheet documented nearly 2,000 gifts, luxury items, and payments totaling approximately $1.8 million, some of which were noted as intended for Epstein’s associates or others connected to his network.

The emails mention former President Donald Trump in only a few instances. Trump has stated that his friendship with Epstein ended before Epstein faced criminal charges. Maxwell has also told federal investigators that she never observed Trump acting inappropriately with Epstein.

The release of the emails follows the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform publicly posting files it received from the Department of Justice regarding the sex-trafficking investigations into Epstein and Maxwell.

Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2021 of recruiting and grooming women for Epstein to sexually abuse, has claimed she was unaware of the full scope of Epstein’s criminal operations. The emails, however, indicate that Maxwell was aware of Epstein’s legal challenges and was involved in discussions about managing them.

Epstein was accused of leading a sex-trafficking operation involving more than 1,000 girls and young women while simultaneously conducting multimillion-dollar investment deals. He died in a New York City jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges.
