It’s always fascinating when the investigator is the one being investigated. Liz Cheney was a former Wyoming Republican who served as vice-chair of the highly politicized Jan. 6 Committee. She acted more like an Adam Schiff copy than a Wyoming Republican.
On Tuesday, the House Oversight Committee published its interim report on the J6 Protests. It concluded that: A) these events could have been prevented and B) Cheney might have criminally tampered a witness in the course of the investigation.
They concluded that it was time to bring Cheney under the spotlight.
The report by the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee’s chairman Barry Loudermilk states that “based on the evidence obtained, it is likely that Liz Cheney, former vice chair of the January 6, Select Committee, broke numerous federal laws. These violations should be investigated and prosecuted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
She was accused of witness tampering. This charge can result in a long prison sentence.
The Subcommittee found evidence that Liz Cheney had secretly communicated with Cassidy Hutchinson to tamper with her testimony. This was done without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge. This secret communication with a Witness is inappropriate and likely violates the 18 U.S.C. 1512. “Such actions are outside the normal legislative process and, therefore, not protected by the Speech and Debate Clause.”
Federal law criminalizes witness tampering of varying degrees and subjects a defendant to as many as 20 years in prison.
In an interim report, the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight made its recommendation on the now-disbanded J6 committee of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
We reported in November that Cheney had inappropriate discussions with Hutchinson before her testimony.
According to Just the News, Cheney exchanged messages in June 2022 with Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide. The investigation was in full swing. Signal, a messaging app, is thought to have been used as a backchannel by Cheney and Hutchinson in June 2022, when the investigation was still underway.
Hutchinson is a former aide of ex-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. He was the witness who claimed that Trump had tried to grab his Secret Service driver’s steering wheel as J6 unfolded. This claim has been strongly disputed.
The Committee claimed that Cheney had committed perjury and asked the FBI to investigate it.
Loudermilk’s Report suggested that Cheney was also responsible for Hutchinson’s testimony.
The report said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation should also investigate Representative Cheney concerning his violation of 18 U.S.C. The report stated that 1622 prohibits anyone from causing another to commit perjury. According to the evidence gathered by this Subcommittee Hutchinson lied under oath before the Select Committee.
The report revealed some other shocking revelations about the corrupt J6 Committee.
The Select Committee did not preserve important evidence from its investigation. More than one terabyte in total was lost, including videos of the witness interviews.
Cassidy Hutchinson, a star witness, made material changes to the testimony she gave with Vice-Chair Cheney. She introduced new narratives in an errata document where some of them were at odds with Secret Service testimony.
Speaker Pelosi accepted some responsibility for the lack of Capitol security shown in footage not broadcasted as part of an HBO documentary made by her daughter.
Department of Defense officials have delayed the deployment of the National Guard to the Capitol, despite orders from President Donald Trump that he should keep both his speech and the Capitol safe.
Once the GOP regains control of the White House, Senate, and House in January, it will be interesting to observe if any consequences are imposed. The Republicans will be able to use more than “strongly worded letters” in the future.
Liz Cheney must face the consequences.
