Scalise released the following statement:
I am now undergoing treatment that will last for several months. I plan to continue working during this time and return to Washington to serve the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District as a Majority leader.
In 2017, Scalise suffered a critical injury in a mass shootout carried out by a leftist derange who ambushed Republicans preparing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. Five years later, he told Fox News Carley Shimkus the following:
Look, it’s been a long road to recovery, but God performed miracles that day. Putting [Congressman Wenstrup] there, David Bailey, and Crystal Griner with Capitol Police who both were shot during the shootout and yet, ultimately, took the shooter down to save all of us that were there.
We hope to see Congressman in remission very soon.
