A federal judge has intervened in the ongoing dispute between the Trump administration and the University of California, Los Angeles, over suspended grant funding.
U.S. District Judge Rita Lin, presiding in San Francisco, has ordered the restoration of a portion of federal grants recently suspended for UCLA. This ruling comes in response to what the judge determined was a violation of her earlier June preliminary injunction, which had directed the National Science Foundation to reinstate numerous terminated grants across the University of California system.
UCLA reported last week that the government had frozen $584 million in funding. The Los Angeles Times indicates that Judge Lin’s order may result in the restoration of more than one-third of this suspended amount. The White House and UCLA have not yet offered comment on this latest development.

President Trump has threatened to cut federal funds for universities in response to pro-Palestinian student protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The administration alleges that universities, including UCLA, have allowed antisemitism during these demonstrations.
Protesters, including some Jewish groups, argue that the government is wrongly equating criticism of Israeli policies with antisemitism. They contend that their advocacy for Palestinian rights does not constitute support for extremism.
This development follows earlier reports that the University of California is reviewing a settlement offer from the Trump administration, which would require UCLA to pay $1 billion. University officials have stated that such a payment would “devastate” the institution.

Experts have raised concerns about free speech and academic freedom in light of the president’s threats. California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has characterized the administration’s settlement offer as a form of extortion.
The government has settled similar probes with Columbia and Brown universities, resulting in substantial payments and acceptance of certain demands. Negotiations with Harvard University are ongoing.
