President Donald Trump has called for billionaire philanthropist George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, to face federal racketeering charges, citing their financial support for progressive causes and political candidates.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump alleged that Soros and his network of donors have fueled unrest in U.S. cities. He wrote:
“George Soros and his radical left son should be charged with RICO because they support violent protests, and much more, throughout the United States of America.”

Trump’s remarks build on his long-standing criticism of Soros, a frequent target of Republican leaders for his significant funding of progressive initiatives, including support for local prosecutors who advocate criminal justice reforms. Trump accused Soros and his allies of causing “great damage” to the country and warned that his movement is “watching” their activities.
The RICO statute, typically used to prosecute organized crime, has not previously been applied to political donors or advocacy groups. Legal experts note that Trump’s call does not carry legal weight but reflects his broader “law-and-order” messaging as Republicans gear up for the 2026 midterm elections.

Democrats and Soros’s Open Society Foundations have rejected similar attacks in the past, calling them unfounded and, at times, rooted in antisemitic tropes. Alex Soros, who took over leadership of the foundation from his father last year, has pledged to continue funding global democracy and human rights projects.
Trump’s comments also come amid renewed debates over the role of wealthy donors in American politics. Republicans have increasingly tied Soros to movements such as Black Lives Matter and bail funds for demonstrators, while Democrats have pointed to Trump’s rhetoric as an attempt to energize his base by portraying progressive activism as a threat to public order.
