A Georgian fisherman faces consequences for harboring several illegal freshwater fish.
Officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division posted news of the recovery on their Facebook page.
According to the post, Game Warden Will Gilstrap noticed something strange while patrolling along the Chattahoochee River in search of fish activity.
Officials with the Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division wrote, “Game Warden Will Gilstrap noticed a subject concealing fish along the riverbank as he caught them.”
Gilstrap found 10 trout in the possession of the fisherman.
According to the Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division, the man was “charged with being over the limit of trout.”
According to the Georgia DNR, “On seasonal trout stream, the creel (how many fish you can keep) limit for trout is eight fish and there is also no size limit.”
Gilstrap, the Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division, and Gilstrap confiscated the trout that the subject caught. The man’s fines and penalties are not yet known.
Users who commented on the post shared mixed reactions.
“So charge him, but let him keep his 6 limit.” The people are not fighting, consuming drugs, or harming anyone. They’re fishing. “Some rules and laws are stupid,” said one user.
Another person wrote: “Some people are struggling to get food and this might be their only option.”
Some defended the actions taken by the game warden, stating that the limitations were necessary to maintain a healthy trout population while allowing other anglers the opportunity to catch fish.
One Facebook user said: “If there are unlimited fish caught, eventually there will only be limited resources available for everyone who fishes.”
