Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is facing significant backlash from conservatives on social media following her comments on a Substack appearance about the recently assassinated conservative commentator, Charlie Kirk. The criticism has gone to such an extent that some are calling for her removal from Congress.

Omar’s remarks were in response to the death of Kirk, a figure who was often at odds with her politically. Omar expressed her condolences to Kirk’s family, but also criticized Kirk, which has led to the current uproar.

Among the critics are conservative influencers, such as LibsofTikTok and End Wokeness, as well as Red State writer Bonchie and conservative influencer Robby Starbuck. Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has also weighed in, reminding Omar of America’s freedom of speech.

Omar’s office responded to the criticisms with a statement from Omar herself, stating that she “disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric”, but did not “wish violence on anyone.” She added that right-wing accounts were spinning a false story and continued to criticize Kirk’s past comments and actions.

Amidst the ongoing debate, the interview also saw Omar express her condolences to Kirk’s family. She continued to speak about the Republicans criticizing violence from the left and highlighted some of Kirk’s controversial statements and views.

While these discussions continue, authorities have made progress in the Kirk case. On Friday, it was reported that a 22-year-old Utah resident, Tyler Robinson, had been arrested in connection with Kirk’s murder. President Trump, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, has labeled Kirk’s murder a “dark moment” for the United States and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.
