Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, announced on Wednesday, March 20th that his government will invest C$8,4 million (US$ 6.1 million) in an investigation into how climate change impacts the decline of democracy.
The Canadian Premier delivered his remarks during his participation in the Third Summit for Democracy, which was convened by South Korea.
Trudeau announced that Canada will invest C$8,4 million in research to better understand the interaction between climate change and democratic decline.
Trudeau stated that the world faces a growing insecurity linked to climate change and armed conflict. He said that the funding would also help to preserve environmental activists’ human rights.
Trudeau said that Canada will increase and expand its funding to the non-profit organization Acces Now to provide the necessary tools for protection to human rights defenders and other people who might be facing digital threats.
