Vice President JD Vance has expressed profound sadness over the tragic loss of Andrew Kraus, the son of Bill Kraus, who co-founded Mission BBQ, in a military training accident. Andrew Kraus was among the four Army service members who lost their lives during a training exercise earlier this month.

Also killed in the accident were Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Cully, Sergeants Donavon Scott and Jadalyn Good. The incident took place near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, on the evening of September 17, when an MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a nighttime operation.

These service members were part of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, an elite Army unit known for specializing in nighttime operations. “This is extremely sad. A great company and a great family. May Andrew and all of the soldiers killed rest in peace,” Vance voiced his sympathies via social media.

Governor Wes Moore also responded to the tragic news of Kraus’s passing, extending his condolences to the family. Mission BBQ, a restaurant chain that began in Glen Burnie, Maryland, has a reputation for supporting charitable organizations focusing on first responders and military service members. Governor Moore stated, “Dawn and I are heartbroken to hear that Andrew Kraus, the son of Mission BBQ co-founder Bill Kraus, died alongside three other service members during a flight training.”

The significance of these losses should not be overlooked as our nation mourns the passing of these brave soldiers. We are reminded, once again, of the risks our service members face in the course of duty, even in training. Our thoughts are with their families and the communities they touched.
