The White House announced on Wednesday that President Biden will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Peru on Saturday.
This is the third time Biden has spoken to Xi face-to-face, but it comes before the transition of President Trump’s new administration in January.
An official in the administration said it was the last meeting Biden and Xi will have. This marks the end of four years of the administration trying to maintain a good relationship with Beijing despite tensions over issues such as economic competition, China supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine, flashpoints like Taiwan and the Philippines, and the discovery of a Chinese spy balloon over the U.S. which sparked tensions and halted communication for much of 2023.
The official stated, “We expect the President to use this opportunity to reflect on the efforts made to manage competition responsibly over the past four years and how both countries have progressed in areas of mutual interest, despite deep differences and intense rivalry.”
