The comedian Chris Rock hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend. He delivered a well-balanced monologue, making fun of President-elect Donald Trump and anti-Trump liberalism, as well as a brutal joke directed towards former President Bill Clinton.
You could tell that the crowd, which was gathered from the streets of Manhattan’s midtown district, wasn’t sure what to think of the show. After all, they’re not used to comedians who dare to delve into un-woke waters and roast both sides of the spectrum.
Some groans were heard. Some uncomfortable moments. Overall, Rock was a success because, like any good comedian, he slammed everyone. This is something unheard of in the Trump age.
SNL has been struggling to deliver laughs over the past few years because they are always mocking one side in a mean-spirited manner. Rock makes a joke about this in his opening joke. He congratulates creator and producer Lorne Micheals on the 50th Anniversary of the sketch comedy program by saying that they had “25 wonderful years.”
The “Grown-Ups” star jumped into politics almost immediately, saying it was “a bad year for [his] people…the blacks,” pointing to Kamala losing the election, Diddy’s news and Jake Paul defeating Mike Tyson who is nearly 60 years old.
Then he shifted to Trump.
Rock stated, “Trump had an excellent year. “Trump has survived an assassination.” The popular vote was the key to winning the presidency. Just named Time’s ‘Man Of The Year’ You know?”
It could happen to someone nicer.
Rock was quick to criticize anti-Trump liberals who said that the return of the president-elect to the White House would shatter all norms and etiquette.
Many people are afraid. He mocked, “Oh, my god, he will be so untidy.” “When I refer to a large number of people, I am referring to the nine New Yorkers who didn’t vote for him, okay?”
Clinton was then brutally slain by him.
Rock said, “This is not the most dignified position in the world.” “We’ve seen presidents arrive at the inauguration wearing pregnant slaves. Okay? “I’m only talking about Bill Clinton.”
Rock joked about the Menendez Brothers getting out of jail just in time for the 47th president to deport them and how they teamed up with “the world’s richest African-American,” El Musk.
“Trump is not playing. He’s got Elon. They’re going to put them in a rocket ship — call it SpaceMex,” he quipped.
The former SNL regular joked that Joe Biden might not have his full mental faculties but still be able to slap people.
I have to give it to Joe. Rock laughed. “He doesn’t speak as fast, or move as quickly as he did before.” “But the middle finger still works.”
The comment was met with laughter. Leftists on X, however, did not laugh. They suggested that Rock should be slapped again by Will Smith for daring to make jokes about politics.
One BlueSky woman wrote: “Normalizing the felon is never funny.” “Love Chris Rock, but oof.”
Another emotionally stunted lib chimed in with this poignant analysis of Chris Rock’s monologue: “Chris Rock can suck my butt with his t Rump ain’t that bad and his botox face.”
You should never, ever say “suck my butt”, if you are over 5. You shouldn’t let that thought even enter your head.
A user on X asked: “Did Will Smith slap the funny out of him?” Others posted a GIF showing the slap that was heard around the globe.
Imagine SNL had tapped into all the comedy coming from the Biden Administration over the last four years. They could have made fun of Biden’s lack of mental fitness in the same way Chevy Chase would make fun of Gerald Ford, or Dana Carvey would parody George H.W. They might still be considered the gold standard of comedy if they had roasted Biden, whose lack of mental fitness could have been easily turned into humor in the same way Chevy Chase used to poke fun at Gerald Ford or Dana Carvey used to parody George H.W.
We got instead years of an angry Alec Baldwin mocking Trump like he was speaking to his daughter.
We’re getting a hint that they are finally loosening up. Carvey played Biden a lot in the last few months, and even performed a skit called “Church Lady”, alongside Hunter Biden.
The opening skit, which was delivered shortly after the elections, poked fun at Trump and Biden. Baldwin, however, returned to play a horrible, malicious imitation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
You win some and you lose some. Comedy is meant to be funny. Only those who are willing to slap each other around can appreciate comedy.
