The state of Texas has initiated a new law enforcement effort in Houston, aimed at combating repeat criminal offenders. Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, announced the deployment of state troopers to support local police in high-crime areas of the city.

This task force represents the first phase of what Governor Abbott describes as a broader statewide crime-fighting strategy. The Texas Department of Public Safety will spearhead this operation, working in conjunction with local law enforcement agencies.

Governor Abbott stated, and I quote, “This is a Texas-size effort by both the state Department of Public Safety as well as local law enforcement at every level, an effort to crack down on dangerous repeat offenders in the Houston area using the full might of our most elite law enforcement officers.” The governor expressed hope that this approach could become, in his words, “the national model for public safety in America’s largest cities.”

A similar initiative was implemented in Austin two years ago. However, reports indicate that the program was terminated following an incident involving state troopers during a traffic stop. The governor’s response at that time was to increase the number of troopers in the state capital.

This development follows earlier reports of Governor Abbott’s criticism of the state’s bail system. The evidence suggests he supports a proposition, scheduled for a statewide vote in November, that would restrict cashless bail for certain violent crimes and sex offenses.
