The writing was on the wall. Even Republicans who were against all things Trump now admit that the Republican Party is Donald Trump’s party. Mitt Romney is one of them. He is now defending the cabinet choices made by President-elect Trump.
An interesting development, indeed.
Mitt Romney, R-UT, says that people “can’t be mad” at Donald Trump’s cabinet picks because Trump had already indicated he would do so before he won.
Romney, who has criticized the President-elect for many years, will leave the Senate after serving one term as Senator from Utah in January. In CNN’s State of the Union, he said that Trump had won the election overwhelmingly and should be allowed to implement the policies he wanted.
“Donald Trump won. He won overwhelmingly. He said what he was going to do, and that’s what he’s doing. I mean, people are saying, ‘oh, I don’t like this appointment or this policy that he’s talking about,’” Romney said. “But those are the things he said he was going to do when he ran. So you can’t complain about someone who does what he said he was going to do.”
“I agree with him in many policy areas.” I’m afraid I have to disagree with him in some areas. It’s just like, OK, let him do what he says he will do and then see how it turns out,” said the GOP senator.
Mitt Romney might have listened to Ronald Reagan retroactively, who said: “The person that agrees with you 80% of the time is your friend and ally, not a 20% traitor.”
In fact, Senator Romney makes some sense. Reagan’s Rule of 80 Percent will have most of the GOP define common ground to unite. The GOP’s House majority is thin, particularly in the Senate. After two years, Team Trump has a good chance of retaining the House. A possible loss would then hamper Trump’s second non-consecutive term. The Republicans must act quickly and all must work together to achieve this.
The Democrats are historically good at this. We shouldn’t expect their disarray following the 2024 election to keep them confused. They will certainly re-unite in opposition to Trump’s agenda. Trump Derangement Syndrome, a contagious condition, is affecting many Democrats.
In an interview with CNN, Romney called for the end of political tribalism.
This message should be delivered to the Democrats. When it comes to political tribalism, they are the worst.
Mitt Romney is leaving the Senate. Who knows what his political future will be after January? He has certainly seen the writing on his wall. Donald Trump is the Republican leader for now and at least the next four years.
