A Canadian tourist was shot and killed on a Mexican beach just days after an Argentine tourist was macheted to death by a Mexican tourist in the same Pacific Coast resort area.

The Mexican state of Oaxaca prosecutor’s office says the Canadian was found in a car dead with a gunshot wound in the relaxed beach town of Puerto Escondido on Monday.

The circumstances surrounding the death of this man were not revealed, but the 27-year-old victim was identified.

Masson’s death came three days after an Argentine tourist was killed by a machete in Oaxaca. Oaxaca is generally regarded as one of the safest states in Mexico. It lies roughly 60 miles west of Puerto Escondido, in the village of La Isla.

Benjamin Gamond, the Argentinean was identified by Mexican police as one of three tourists who were attacked on Friday with a machete. He died at the hospital following the attack. Two of his travel companions sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

State Department’s current travel advice urges Americans “to exercise increased caution when traveling” to Oaxaca.

In 2023, several tourists have been victims of crime. One was a Mexican who was killed in the Caribbean resort of Tulum during a dramatic robbery in an American coffee chain in April.

Unknown assailants shot an American tourist in the leg in March in Puerto Morelos, a town outside Cancun. This happened during spring break. The victim survived.
